Blaze Destroys Home, But Firefighters Say Smoke Alarm Saved Sleeping Family’s Lives

A terrifying fire destroyed a family’s home in the middle of the night. But miraculously, the entire family managed to escape from the blaze without any injuries.

In a report shared on June 16, 2017, Fox5 recounted the story of the house fire that occurred early in the morning hours of June 14, 2017.

The fire occurred at a home in Cherokee County, Georgia.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The entire family was sleeping when the house erupted in flames. The family and firefighters are crediting a smoke detector with waking up the family and saving their lives.

Even though firefighters arrived at the home within seven minutes of the fire call, it was already completely engulfed when they arrived.

The family included a woman, her daughter, and her daughter’s small children.

“That’s the very reason that we tell people to change those batteries every year,” Cherokee Fire spokesman Tim Cavender said. “Because this one smoke detector woke that family up, and all five of those members were able to get out of that house.”

While it is a tragedy that this family lost their home, they are incredibly lucky to have all escaped with their lives. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the family in the aftermath of the house fire.

This story reenforces the importance of keeping your smoke detectors up and running at all times.
